Velasco Research Page

Mayda Velasco's research on high-energy particle physics is currently centered around three experiments that she is participating in at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland.  These are:

The NA48-1 and NA48-2 experiments, which are looking at charge-parity (CP) violation in Ks and K± beams.  These experiments are ultimately aimed at helping us understand the nature of the electroweak force, and in particular, its important role in solving the problem of CP violation in the early Universe.  In short, why is there more matter than anti-matter in the Universe?

Professor Velasco is finishing up the analysis of data taken by experiment NA59 in the summer of 2000.  This experiment explored the possibility of using crystals to produce polarized photon beams out of unpolarized electrons.
 
Velasco  is also an active member of the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN .  CMS will start collecting data in 2007 from proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass of 14 TeV.  Velasco is currently the co-convenor for the hadronic calorimeter (HCAL) calibration. Northwestern colleagues Schmitt and Schellman are also active on CMS, and Gobbi has been a leading member for several years.

In addtion, Velasco is a member of the CLIC Board and the CLIC/CTF3 collaboration. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) study is a site independent feasibility study aiming at the development of a realistic technology at an affordable cost for an electron-positron Linear Collider in the post-LHC era for Physics up to the multi-TeV center of mass colliding beam energy range (0.5 to 5 TeV).
